Using this site

Signing your child up for camp should not depend on which device you own or how you read a screen.

What we aim for

This site is built to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA. That is the standard most public bodies are held to, and it is the one we hold ourselves to whether or not anyone requires it of us.

What that means in practice

  • Colour contrast is measured, not eyeballed. The text and background pairings used across the site were checked against the standard, and the ratios are recorded alongside the colours themselves so they cannot quietly drift when the design changes.
  • Every form control has a real label, and when a field is wrong the error message is attached to that field — so a screen reader announces the problem rather than leaving someone to guess which box turned red.
  • Charts have a table underneath them. Where the camp office sees a graph, the same figures are also present as text.
  • Touch targets are at least 44 pixels. Most families register on a phone.
  • Motion can be turned off. If your device is set to reduce motion, the scroll animations do not run — the content simply appears.
  • It works without JavaScript. If scripts do not run, the content is revealed rather than left invisible.

Where we know we fall short

Photographs uploaded by our staff during the summer do not always carry a description. We ask for one when a photograph is added, but it is not compulsory, and a busy counsellor posting from a field is not always going to write it. If you use a screen reader and the gallery is unhelpful, tell us — that is exactly the kind of thing we would rather fix than leave.

If something does not work

Please tell us, and please be as specific as you can manage — which page, what you were trying to do, and what device or assistive software you were using. We will fix it, and in the meantime we will get your child registered ourselves over the phone or by email so that nothing about your summer waits on our website.
